Diaper Cakes: almost as gross as they sound.

So, I don't have kids, nor do I plan on becoming a mom for quite some time. But when I do reach that stage of life, I'll tell you what I don't want: a diaper cake. Yes, that tasty looking creation above is not a wedding dessert, but rather, a decorative tower of baby underpants. And I don't get it.

I readily acknowledge that diapers are crazy expensive, and to purchase them for new parents is a big help. A great gesture. But in my mind, a cake constructed from diapers is the archetypal symbol of, "you are no longer cool, and all youth/aesthetic sense you ever had is now in the hands of a screaming infant." Not OK. Also, what are you supposed to do with that gaudy thing? Display it in your nursery? Nothing about a sheath of plastic that will soon be defecated in is attractive to look at!

If you know a mom-to-be, don't waste your money (upwards of 65 bucks!) on the diaper cake. Here's what to do instead. Run out and spend the money on a fabulous bag with tons of room and plenty of pockets. Like this here Marc Jacobs number:

Or this demure tote by Orla Kiely:

Or even this cutie by DwellStudio:

Once you've picked the perfect purse, stuff that monster full of diapers. And voila! The perfect gift essential for the care of a new baby, but it's really all about the mom. See how tricky I am? It's practical, beautiful, and way better than some 5 tier bloomer tart.

  1. haha this is a funny idea! I mean, I definitely agree with you that there are much more practical gifts to buy a mom-to-be. It's clever, but a bit out there for me. I'll stick to a cute diaper bag if I ever find myself in the situaiton.

  2. I've seen a diaper cake before on a show called Platinum Babies...I am pretty sure they are just an excuse to spend money and an easy gift for new parents that the purchaser does not have to put any thought into! They are pretty funny. A woman in my neighborhood got one and ended up taking it apart and using the diapers haha

  3. Haha yeah, I mean using the diapers is the point of course but I just think the construction of a cake is a bit ridiculous. And the great thing about these bags I feature is that they're not actually diaper bags so you can always use them.

  4. hahahah wow a diaper cake has to be the weirdest thing ever, but then again, people do weird things at baby showers (like stupid cheesy party games when everyone at the party is an adult). If I was having a baby, I would rather people save money on the construction of the diaper cake, and just buy me MORE diapers!

  7. you're all dumb. diaper cakes are not weird or gross, they are a VERY popular baby shower gift. If you put it together yourself and make sure everything on it can be used, it's no more expensive than buying a box of diapers and a roll of wrapping paper. and all of those bags are UGLY. get a life.... or not

    1. I think diaper cakes are adorable and I make them and my husband, who normally could care less about my other crafts, LOVES THEM!!!! He even thinks I should charge double than what I do now.

    3. Thank you! People on here are tripping! This is the first time I've ever heard negative comments regarding diaper cakes! They must not have kids. Become a mom a I'll bet you wish you would've accepted that diaper cake once you run out of diapers. Yeah, let's buy a boring purse and use it as a diaper bag. Like, that's sure to light up the mom2be's eyes.

    4. Lol, there is nothing more boring than a diaper. Arranging them in a "cake" doesn't make diapers any less mundane. A purse full of new diapers is much more creative as a gift, and more useful for the mom. Nothing is less creative than gifting just diapers, for goodness' sake. Anyone who gets excited by a diaper cake is boring, and you two are in denial.

Massive props to this blog's writer for perfect critical thinking skills and original thinking!

  14. If you were a mother you would understand the necessary of diapers. But your post shows a lot of ignorance. The idea of the diaper cake is to demonstrate that in one week, the baby will use up the diapers on display. That's right, the "cake" is not for just display only, it's to be used. Hence the wrapping or gentle handling. A baby goes through TONS of diapers so rather showing up with a pack of diapers this is a more playful way.

Another surprise for you, these diaper cakes are a HIT at showers! And if you don't want to do this, you don't have to, that's why there's a baby registry. So you see, your gift suggestion although fashionable but lacking in practicality (the dad will have to use it) may not be what the mother really needs. Practicality takes over anything specially when there's an infant involved.

  15. I agree with the OP. I don't get it either, and I'd rather have a purse--the first one for when I'm feeling cheerful and "artsy," and the second one for more serious occasions. But then again, I also like kids best when they're potty-trained and belong to someone else.
